Greenpeace organized an all female expedition to Ojos del Salado, the highest active volcano in the world (6,893 masl) accompanied by the climbing Cholitas from Bolivia and numerous representatives from different Latin American countries. The central idea was connecting this group of women with the mountain.
This trip culminates with the debut of the documentary Magmandinas that will be broadcast for the first time on Tuesday, March 8 at 9:00 p.m. on open television (La Red channel).
“Thinking and believing that one species has supremacy over another, that they cohabit on this Earth, and that through force they can dominate, conquer, commercialize and even kill members of their own tribe, is the same logic with which the extractivism and machismo. Cultural practices that have shown us to lead us as a global society to collapse and destruction”, says Soledad Acuña, sustainability director of Greenpeace Andino, about this new International Women’s Day.
And she adds: “It is time to recover ancestral practices and philosophies, reconnect with nature and protect it as another extension of ourselves, as our ancestors did wisely. It is time to unite, beyond borders, and make visible our struggles and resistance, which are always linked to the sovereignty of our body and the defense of the land.”
The documentary, in which climbers from Mexico, Argentina, Peru, Bolivia, Chile, the United States, Colombia, and Venezuela participated, was made in partnership with Patagonia and has a historical, close, epic, pacifist, sororo, and ecofeminist tone.
“Our objective is to make visible and inspire different women, within the framework of 8M, through this unprecedented expedition where, despite not being able to reach the summit, an overwhelming sorority experience was lived that will inspire millions of women to find or search its own summit”, indicates Soledad Acuña from Greenpeace.
“Deconstructing ourselves to deconstruct our society and thus decolonize ourselves, is as important as overturning the patriarchal order that is destroying the Planet”, they conclude from the NGO.
